General Dynamics Electric Boat (CO-OP Engineer)

Engineering Skills Demonstrated

- Manufacturing Engineering Support: Supported Virginia-class submarine production through repair procedure development, engineering revision review, and technical documentation work.
- Quality and Compliance: Worked within a safety-critical defense manufacturing environment, supporting documentation and verification efforts tied to quality and SUBSAFE compliance.
- Technical Documentation: Reviewed engineering reports, change notices, vendor information, and test records to support accurate manufacturing decisions and traceability.
- Test Documentation Verification: Verified hydrostatic and nondestructive test documentation to help ensure hardware met required quality and inspection standards.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Coordinated information between engineering, manufacturing, quality, and review stakeholders to help resolve technical issues under real production constraints.
- Systems-Level Thinking: Gained experience understanding how individual parts, documentation packages, revisions, testing records, and compliance requirements connect within a larger submarine manufacturing program.

Project Summary:

Supported manufacturing engineering work for Virginia-class submarine production in a highly regulated defense environment. My role focused on technical documentation, quality compliance, repair procedure development, engineering revision review, and verification of testing records for safety-critical hardware.

This experience strengthened my understanding of how complex engineering systems are built, documented, inspected, and maintained under strict quality and compliance requirements. The work required careful coordination between engineering disciplines, manufacturing teams, quality organizations, and program requirements, giving me direct exposure to the level of technical rigor needed in large-scale defense manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities:

Supported Virginia-class submarine manufacturing by developing repair procedures, verifying hydrostatic and nondestructive test documentation, and auditing engineering revisions to ensure quality and SUBSAFE compliance.
Reviewed technical information across engineering reports, change notices, vendor documentation, and manufacturing records to identify inconsistencies and support accurate disposition of hardware.
Coordinated with engineers and manufacturing stakeholders to help resolve nonconformance issues while maintaining schedule, quality, and compliance expectations.
Contributed to documentation and process updates that improved traceability, reduced ambiguity, and supported future engineering decision-making.

Engineering Management Skills Demonstrated:

Technical communication: Translated complex engineering information into clear documentation suitable for review, approval, and manufacturing use.
Quality and compliance awareness: Worked within a safety-critical environment where engineering decisions had to meet strict documentation, testing, and quality standards.
Cross-functional coordination: Supported communication between engineering, manufacturing, quality, vendors, and review stakeholders.
Systems thinking: Developed a better understanding of how individual parts, documentation packages, testing records, and engineering changes affect the broader manufacturing program.
Schedule-conscious execution: Balanced technical accuracy with the practical need to keep manufacturing and review processes moving.

Outcome:

This experience gave me a stronger foundation in safety-critical engineering, manufacturing support, technical documentation, and cross-functional problem-solving. It also shaped my interest in engineering management by showing how effective technical leadership depends on more than design ability alone; it requires clear communication, disciplined documentation, coordination across teams, and sound judgment under real program constraints.
